Lund University Global #1 in Empirical Studies in Software Engineering

2014-09-20

A short paper that was presented at the ongoing ESEM conference i Torino, Italy has investigated what universities and other organisations has published and been cited most since 1997. No doubt is USA the most successful country followed by UK, while Sweden is 3rd. But when counting institutions Lund University ends up as number one.

Statistics from the paper "Support Mechanisms to Conduct Empirical Studies in Software Engineering”, published at ESEM 2014:

  • "After the collection process we [ended up] in 898 papers, 202 from EASE, 374 from ESEM, and 322 from ESEJ.”
  • "The country that most contributes to the conference is the United States of America, with 187 publications, followed by United Kingdom, with 138 publications. Other countries that have an important role as contributor are Sweden (82), Germany (78), Norway (71), Italy (67), and Australia (61).“
  • "The institutions that most contributed with published studies are Lund University (40), Keele University (37), and Maryland University (37).”
  • “The most used support mechanism was [the experimentation guidebook by Wohlin, Runeson et al], cited by 88 studies”.

- Again, we confirmed that we are part of a truly competitive research environment in Southern Sweden. And our collaborators at BTH scored top 2 and 3 among the authors. In this particular case the success to a good part is due to our excellent relations width competent and engaged local industry partners. Without that cooperation it is hard to do relevant empirical studies in software engineering, says Per Runeson, Head of Dept. of Computer Science in Lund, where the greater part of the 40 Lund studies have been conducted.
