Septemper 2009 update

  • Project meetings with Sony Ericsson and Ericsson have been held.
  • The existing code base for CAL-compilation has been looked into, including front end, Ccode
  • generator, and VHDL-code generator.
  • Discussions with the ACTORS project are ongoing for sharing CAL front end,
  • transformations, and code generators.
  • The question of target reconfigurable architecture has been further investigated, but not
  • decided yet.
  • Kris Kuchcinski, LU, together with researchers from Rennes University, France, developed a method for computational pattern identification, selection and scheduling application with these patterns. The method is relevant for this project and has been published in fourconference papers this year (including one invited paper).
  • A first study on using thread-level speculation for enabling parallel execution of embedded JavaScript applications has been conducted and a paper has been submitted on that study. Thread-level speculation is a way to optimistically extract parallelism from a sequential program. If the speculation (guess) is wrong due to data dependencies, we must perform a roll-back to a safe point in the execution and continue, possibly sequentially, from that point.
  • Håkan Grahn, BTH, was part of the organization committee for Multicore Day, held at SICS on September 4, 2009. Information material (folders) about EASE was distributed at the occasion.

Planned activities:

  • Per Andersson, LU, will have more time allocated to EASE from mid September
  • A one-day workshop for the theme participants in order to enhance cooperation within the theme.
  • A continued study on thread-level speculation for extracting parallelism in embedded JavaScript applications. In this study we plan to use more irregular applications, which are more difficult to analyze, than we did in the first study.
  • Contact and initial discussions with Axis Communications regarding potential participation within Theme B.
