BRICS / RoboEarth / Rosetta Knowledge Engineering Workshop at European Robotics Forum 2011

European Robotics Forum 2011, Västerås

Workshop 30, "Knowledge Engineering in Robotics"

April 8th, 8.30-10.00, Room 3

MOTIVATION

There is a number of EU FP7-funded robotic projects that intensively exploit knowledge of various kind, be it common-sense, space and geometry, tasks and skills, accuracy or safety. The projects involved in organising this event are BRICS, RoboEarth, Rosetta and euRobotics. Knowledge representation and reasoning is a substantial issue in each of them. We would like to identify and possibly exploit synergies among the works being done in these and other similar research projects.

This workshop is a follow-up to the event held a year ago at the previous EURON/EUROP forum 2010 (scroll down for proceedings) held in Donostia, Spain, in March 2010.

AGENDA

Introduction

Knowledge Engineering in RoboEarth

Knowledge Engineering in PROTEUS

Knowledge Engineering in GeRT

Knowledge Engineering in Rosetta

Knowledge Engineering in BRICS

OBJECTIVES

To goal of this workshop is to inform, discuss, and possibly converge on various aspects of knowledge representation, including:

  • Terminology. E.g., what are task descriptions, action recipes, skills and other primitives, in the context of each project, and what are their relationships?
  • Conventions. Are there shared definitions, conventions (e.g., coordinate systems, units), and data structures between the projects?
  • Scene graphs. How should data be represented (maps, objects, actions)? What data should be annotated and how? What kind of reasoning is performed or needed?
  • Reuse of knowledge. How can a robot decide which knowledge (e.g., map or skill) to reuse in a new situation?
  • Reuse of tools. What existing software modules, algorithms, libraries, or APIs can be reused?
  • Knowledge engineering. How will/should the knowledge base grow? What are the processes leading to creation of a substantial knowledge base useful in real applications, i.e. the bootstrapping of the KB?

We expect every active participant to address in their presentations one or more topics mentioned above. In particular, the guided discussion is intended to lead to conclusions about commonalities and differences among the presented approaches.
