This thesis compares the energy efficiency of state-of-the-art CPU and GPU solutions for ray tracing; GPU-based OptiX and CUDA RT and CPU-based Embree, and investigates the reasons behind the differences. The comparison is done by measuring the energy in kilojoules that needs to be spent to attain a specific level of image quality. Recently there have been successful efforts to leverage modern programmable GPUs for ray tracing. However, in professional so-called render farms, CPUs are still dominant.
Path tracing is a popular method based on ray tracing to produce digital images with correct global illumination. The main drawback with this approach is that it is generally very computationally expensive to produce an image. It is often necessary to trace hundreds or even thousands of rays per pixel to produce a good image. In motion picture productions, studios have big render farms to accelerate rendering. In these settings, power and cooling comes with a significant cost, and thus power efficiency is of utmost importance.
We show that the relative energy efficiency between the CPU and GPU solutions examined are within a factor of two, where CPU-based Embree is on par with GPU-based OptiX.

With 3D display technology emerging in the mobile phone industry, the possibility to watch 3D movies comes to the cellular phone. Since many cell phones today are equipped with large touch screen displays this enables new ways to interact with video players. For instance, the user could swipe the finger to change the current sequence viewpoint, giving the effect of being present at the actual 3D scene. With the limited amount of resources in a mobile environment, how can this be achieved in a smooth and synchronized manner?
In this thesis, an exploratory study has been conducted to better understand the nature of these challenges. This resulted in the decision of what platform and operating system to use. A prototype video player application called VideoPlayer3D was then investigated and implemented using the information compiled from the exploratory study.
The VideoPlayer3D prototype has been evaluated and the results are very promising. It enables the user to playback 3D and 2D video, both from SD-card and streaming over the Internet. It handles instantaneously switching between four different viewpoints, although at the expense of resolution. Future work includes adding support for an arbitrary number of viewpoints, zooming in/out the video and allow for changing the horizontal disparity.

Sammanfattning:
This report describes the migration of an analytical motion blur rasterizer
implementation on the CPU to the GPU using OpenCL. Data- and algorithmic
parallelism is identified and exploited to gain the performance benefits
of the highly parallel GPU. Some promising results are presented, with
interactive frame rates for simple scenes with low to medium motion.

Sparse voxel octree ray casting is an alternative rendering technique to rasteri- zation for static geometry. The hierarchical structure of the octree enables some nice properties for the ray casting method: the traversal of the octree data has a logarithmic time complexity and level of detail is handled automatically by terminating the traversal at a lower depth level. Furthermore, the octree data structure is well suited for dynamic streaming and virtualization since both the geometry and the material data can be stored in one data structure. It is possi- ble that in the future highly detailed scenes with complex geometry and unique texturing will perform better with sparse voxel octree ray casting than with ras- terization of indexed triangle meshes. On the negative side, the memory re- quirements are generally higher and the image quality is currently not as good as rasterization with triangle meshes.
In this thesis we design and implement a method for virtualized sparse voxel octree ray casting. We compare our method to other published methods and discuss the differences as well as present some ideas for future work. A novel octree traversal algorithm is also described (but not performance evaluated) for a SIMD type of instruction set.

The graphical processing unit (GPU) is becoming an essential part of mobile
phones and handsets. This improves the ability of handling graphics in
handsets significantly. With this new chip it becomes possible to develop new
stunning games but also new innovative 3D GUI (Graphical User Interfaces).
Today there exist a couple of benchmarking programs targeting mobile GPUs
but all of these benchmarking tools are all focused on game performance and
not GUI performance. The aim with this master?s thesis is to develop a benchmarking
program for mobile GPUs focusing on GUI performance. We have
identified five features that are important when benchmarking a handset, from
a GUI perspective: scissoring, texture uploads, alpha blending, load times and
frame rate. Additionally, we have benchmarked five different devices using
our tool. From the test we could conclude that there were big differences in
the performance compared to the specification sheets.
