Tuesday, 10 June there will be a master thesis presentation in Computer Science at Lund University, Faculty of Engineering.

The presentation will take place in E:2116.

Title: Memory Interference Mitigation: Comparing Isolation and Redundancy in Automotive Software

As automotive software complexity increases, ensuring safety against memory interference has become critical, especially in systems without virtual memory support. This thesis investigates two approaches to memory interference mitigation: SafeMem, a library using a software-based redundancy technique, and a hardware-based isolation method using a Memory Protection Unit (MPU). We design and implement an MPU-based solution on a real-world automotive control system and evaluate it against SafeMem across three metrics: latency, memory usage, and safety. Our results show that the MPU approach can significantly reduce execution overhead and RAM usage, while providing improved fault detection, containment, and traceability. However, the MPU solution introduces added development complexity and demands a more rigorous validation process. Overall, the MPU offers a promising alternative for improving both performance and safety in embedded automotive systems.
